West Springfield Park and Recreation Department

Yoga with Pilates

The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department will offer two levels of Yoga with Pilates classes, beginning the week of March 6, 2012. Yoga for the intermediate/advance level will be held on Tuesday evenings 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Yoga for the beginner will be on Thursday evenings 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Classes are held at Mittineague School Gym. (Class on March 6th will be held at Tatham School Gym.)

Lynn McCarthy will instruct Hatha Yoga and Mat Pilates techniques along with controlled deep breathing for total well being and health for the mind and body. Benefits help improve coordination, increase range of motion, increase muscle strength and balancing and total body alignment. Bring your own mat and comfortable clothing.

Registrations currently accepted at the West Springfield Park and Recreation Department Office, 26 Central Street, 2nd floor of the Municipal Office Building. The fee is $40/level for residents and $50/level for non-residents. This program fills fast; please do not wait until the last minute to register. Mail in registration form available online at www.west-springfield.ma.us. When using mailing in registration form please use activity number 201030 for Tuesday's intermediate class and 201040 for Thursday's beginner class.


AEROBICS

The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for the Spring Session of Aerobic Classes. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Mittineague School in West Springfield. This is a 6-week program (12 classes) and will begin on March 6, 2012. (Class on March 6th will be held at Tatham School Gym.)

Lynn McCarthy is the instructor for this class. Lynn has been involved in the fitness industry for over 30 years. Ms. McCarthy currently holds certification in aerobics, kickboxing, and personal training. She is also a certified Nutrition Specialist and PACE Arthritis Instructor.

The registration fee is $35. Non-residents $40. Pre-registration is required. Registrations are on first come first served basis. Class size is limited. No registrations will be accepted the night of the class. This program fills fast; please do not wait until the last minute to register. Free Family Ice Skating

The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department is offering free skate time for families at the Amelia Park Ice Arena, 21 South Broad Street, Westfield, on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 10:00AM – 10:50AM.

To participate in this event, any West Springfield resident must acquire a free skate voucher at the West Springfield Park and Recreation Department, 26 Central Street, 2nd floor of the Municipal Office Building prior to noon on Thursday, February 23rd. The voucher must be presented at the time of skate to receive an admission band for entry to the rink. Parental signature is required for children under 18 and helmets are highly recommended for children.

The Park & Recreation Department is open Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Proof of residency is required to receive a voucher.

Skate rental is available for a cost of $2.00 per person. Because there are a limited number of vouchers available, vouchers will be issued on a first come first served basis. For more information, please call the West Springfield Park & Recreation Department at 263-3284.


YOUTH CHEERLEADING COACHES WANTED:

The West Springfield Youth Cheerleading Association, as sponsored by the Park & Recreation Department, is accepting applications for persons interested in coaching in the Fall 2012 season. Applications may be obtained at the Park & Recreation Department Office, located in the Town Hall, 26 Central Street – Suite 19, West Springfield. The deadline for submittal of applications is February 29, 2012. Any questions can be directed to the Park & Recreation Department Office at (413) 263-3284, Monday-Friday, 8:00AM – 4:30PM.


Baseball & Softball Sign Ups Deadline March 1st!

The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for the 2012 Youth Baseball and Softball seasons. This program is for children who are West Springfield residents or currently registered in a public or private school in West Springfield. If you are interested in registering your child please click on the link below, "Baseball and Softball Registration Form", for a mail in registration form. Please remember that your child's registration must be received before March 1, 2012 to avoid being placed on a waiting list. If you have any questions please call 413-263-3284.

ADULT CO-ED RECREATIONAL VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM

Registrations for teams are now being accepted at the West Springfield Park & Recreation Department Office for an Adult Co-ed Volleyball League. This Co-ed League meets two times a week, either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings beginning the week of March 20th at the W.S. Middle School Gymnasium. The program will run approximately six weeks. Anyone interested in entering a team is asked to contact the Park & Recreation Office for an official roster form. The program cost is $35 per person ($40 for non-residents), includes team t-shirts. Team rosters cannot exceed 10 players. The deadline to submit team rosters is February 23rd.

FREE PITCHING CLINIC

The West Springfield Recreation Youth Softball Association and the West Springfield Park & Recreation Department will hold a free INTRODUCTION TO PITCHING CLINIC for girls in grades 2, 3, and 4, who will be playing in the Youth Softball program this Spring. This free clinic will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2012 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in the Middle School Cafeteria. Volunteers from the Softball Association will be there to help the girls get started. All of the girls are asked to bring someone with them (usually a parent), that can act as their personal coach and catcher. Girls should wear sneakers and bring their glove. The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department along with the Suburban Softball Association are pleased to offer the 14th Annual Instructional Softball program for youths ages 8-15. The softball clinic will be held Sunday evenings at the Senior High School Gym for eight sessions. The program will emphasis pitching, catching, fielding and hitting skills. The fee for the clinic is $40. Additional training in pitching is available from 7:30-8:00 p.m. for an additional $10.

Suburban Softball Clinic Registration Form


The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department is sponsoring the following bus trips...

1. The Wrentham Premium Outlets in Wrentham, MA on Saturday, March 10, 2012. Bus leaves municipal parking lot at 9:00 am arriving at the shops around 10:45 am. You will have until 6:30 pm to shop and dine before boarding bus to arrive home approximately 8:15 pm. There are approximately 170 premium stores to shop as well as several restaurants and a food court.

Cost is $35 pp. Registrations with payment may be made at the West Spfld Park & Recreation Dept. 26 Central Street, M-F between the hours of 8a.m.-4:00 p.m. Checks should be made payable to Town Of West Springfield. Registrations for this trip are always a sellout so register now to avoid disappointment.

2. To the Bronx Zoo on Sat., May 5, 2012. The cost is $45/children 3yrs-12yrs and $55/adults. Your day includes roundtrip motor coach, the Bronx Zoo Total Experience Pass, which includes: Zoo Entrance, Skyfari, Monorail, Congo Gorilla Exhibit, Children’s Zoo and Butterfly Garden. Departure time is 7:30 a.m. from the Municipal parking lot on Central St. Return home time is approximately 7:30 p.m.

Grace Lutheran Church

Tropical Sunday, an annual tradition at Grace Lutheran Church, 1552 Westfield Street, will be celebrated on Sunday, February 19th at the 9:30 a.m. service. The sanctuary will be decorated with tropical plants and flowers, parishioners are encouraged to wear cruisewear fashions and the music, provided by Graces's Back Row Band, will have a Latin beat. Everyone will be given a lei to wear when they enter the sanctuary. Coffee hour, which follows the service, will feature baked goods with pineapple, coconut ande other tropical flavors. If you want a break from winter and you're not able to head to warmer places, come and join the celebration of Tropical Sunday. Everyone is welcome! On Saturday, February 18th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Grace Lutheran Church will hold a rummage sale featuring gently used clothing and housewares. The church is located at 1552 Westfield Street (Route 20) in West Springfield. Donations will be accepted at the church Tuesday, February 14th through Thursday, February 16th between 9 a.m. and noon and on Friday, February 17th from
1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pick-ups are also available by calling Martha at 568-8033.


Lent begins at Grace Lutheran Church on Route 20 in West Springfield on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. There will be two opportunities for worship - a noon service followed by a luncheon for those who are able to attend during the day and a 6 p.m. service for those who are able to come in the evening. On the other Wednesdays in Lent: February 29, March 7, March14, March 21 and March 28, Grace will hold a Lenten evening supper at 6 p.m.. The focus of the Lenten gatherings will be "Water Blessings in the Bible", a study of water and our journey of faith. Following the suppers will be the Holden Evening Prayer Service. The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department is seeking a Tennis Director to instruct youth tennis lessons. Responsible for planning, designing, and instructing tennis lessons. Program runs on Sunday afternoons from April 22 to June 3, 2012, with some pre-season and post-season meetings.

Qualifications: Minimum of 21 years of age. Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certifications. Current Tennis Pro Certification (USPTA) recommended. Previous experience teaching youth tennis including ability to evaluate and correct tennis techniques. Umpires needed for Park & Recreation Baseball

The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for employment as a baseball umpire. All boys or girls 14 years of age and over with interest and knowledge of the game are eligible to umpire during the upcoming season. Adult/Son teams are encouraged and welcomed. Adults are strongly encouraged to apply as well.

Anyone wishing to umpire should fill out an employment application at the West Springfield Park & Recreation Department, 26 Central Street, 2nd floor of the Municipal Office Building or applications can be downloaded for the Park & Recreation Department’s website at www.west-springfield.ma.us. Our speaker today was West Springfield native, William J. Rogalski, General Manager of the Holyoke Mall at Ingelside. The Mall opened in 1979 and last year brought in over four hundred million dollars of business. Its basic offering of space and traffic provide the indoor clients with a relaxing and modern venue.
